Core Web Vitals

Your frequently asked questions answered

I understand that a Core Web Vitals or Web Performance audit  might not be something that you do every day. You are not alone and I expect that you have questions. These are the questions that I answer the most. If your question is not in here do not hesitate to contact me!

General Core Web Vitals Consultancy Questions

How often should a Core Web Vitals audit be conducted?

That entirely depends. Typically, clients return for another (quick) audit after implementing major changes that could impact Core Web Vitals. I advise all my clients to implement RUM tracking. That means real-time notifications of any Core Web Vitals regression which eliminates the need for frequent audits. However, if Core Web Vitals performance drops unexpectedly, it's smart to re-audit the site to identify and address the issues quickly.

Deliverables

Will you provide continued support

Yes, It is important to me that the goals we have set are met no matter what! That is why all my audits come with a scheduled meet where I clarify any questions you might have. If, for some reason you still have questions after the result meeting my audit comes with continued support (within my discretion). If you wish to improve further beyond the scope of the audit you can always book additional sessions or a few hours of Core Web Vitals Consultancy.

How long does it take to conduct a Core Web Vitals audit?

It generally takes me about a week to conduct a Core Web Vitals audit and write the Core Web Vitals report. Sometimes I directly recommend some simple but high impact changes but the main audit results will take about a week.
Before I start auditioning your website I will always schedule a free call with you. This will allow us to  discuss your website's pagespeed goals and specific needs, discuss your website's technical setup, answer any questions you may have about the audit process and set a clear timeline for the audit and following meet.

What tools do you use for a Core Web Vitals audit?

I use the CrUX dataset as my definitive measure of success. At the end of the audit and when my recommendations have been implemented I expect the CrUX data to improve. I do not let myself be guided by other Lab metric like lighthouse.

There are many other tools that I use. For example: Core/Dash, the Chrome performance trace, The Core Web Vitals visualizer,  react profiler tools etc

Why is a Core Web Vitals audit important?

A Core Web Vitals audit is a process of evaluating a website's performance on these metrics and identifying areas for improvement. By analyzing and improving the performance of a website, a company can provide a better experience for its users, which can lead to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty. Additionally, Google has announced that it will use Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor in its search algorithm, so a website with better Core Web Vitals scores may rank higher in search results.

What are the key components of a Core Web Vitals audit?

The key components of a Core Web Vitals audit include evaluating the website's loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability. This may involve analyzing metrics such as First Contentful Paint (FCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS).

How can the results of a Core Web Vitals audit be used to improve a website?

The results of a Core Web Vitals audit can be used to identify areas for improvement on a website, such as optimizing images and other large assets, reducing the number of redirects, and minimizing the use of third-party scripts. By implementing these and other performance-enhancing changes, a company can improve the performance of its website and provide a better experience for its users.

Is a Core Web Vitals audit the same as a page speed audit?

While a Core Web Vitals audit and a page speed audit are similar in that they both involve analyzing the performance of a website, they are not the same thing. A Core Web Vitals audit specifically focuses on the Core Web Vitals metrics, which measure the performance, usability, and visual stability of a webpage. A page speed audit may also include an analysis of these metrics, but may also include additional performance-related factors, such as server response times and the size of page elements!

Can a Core Web Vitals audit be conducted on a website that is not live or publicly accessible?

Yes, a Core Web Vitals audit can be conducted on a website that is not live or publicly accessible. In this case, the website would need to be hosted on a development or staging server, and the audit would be conducted on the staging server rather than the live website. This can be useful for testing and debugging purposes, as well as for identifying performance issues before a website is launched!
