How repeated layout shifts erode visual stability in the field
Each unexpected layout frame during page load increments the shift count. Across 5,477 sites (57.2%) with 0 lab shifts, 91% pass field CLS, and across 2,595 sites (27.1%) with 1 to 2 shifts, 80% pass field CLS. When a page triggers 3 to 5 shifts (9.3%), good field CLS drops to 62%, and at 6 or more shifts (6.4%, 612 sites) good field CLS falls to 55%.
Understanding layout shift count
Eliminate sequential layout jumps by setting explicit width and height on every image and iframe, pre-allocating fixed height for top announcement bars, and matching fallback font metrics. Across all audited sites, 57.2% record 0 shifts (91% good CLS) and 6.4% record 6 or more (55% good CLS).
