Every <iframe> creates an independent browsing context with its own document, styles, and scripts, and frequently resizes asynchronously after load. Adding 1 iframe (16.2%) lowers good CLS to 88%, 2 to 3 iframes (21.2%) drops good CLS to 88%, and 4 or more iframes (9.1%, 5,759 sites) pulls good CLS down to 82%.
Understanding iframe count
Reserve explicit width, height, or CSS aspect-ratio boxes for YouTube, map, and ad iframes, and replace below-the-fold video embeds with click-to-load facades. On WordPress, 53.5% of sites have 0 iframes (93% good CLS) while 9.1% embed 4+ iframes (82% good CLS).
